Schoeman celebrated its centenary in 2019. The family business evolved over the past 100 years to become the operation it is today.
Schoeman farms 1 500ha citrus on the farm Moosrivier in the Groblersdal/Marble Hall area.
The Schoeman Boerdery produces yellow and white maize, soya beans and small white beans on 9 400ha in the Delmas region.
The latest addition to the Schoeman Boerdery is the 1 700ha Zoetwater farm under irrigation on the Orange River. The farm was acquired in January 2019.
The Schoeman grain handling facilities were born out of necessity to handle our own grain. It made financial sense to control the surplus and grading of our own harvests.
Social Responsibility is more than a public relations exercise at Schoeman. The business has a long history of involvement with social development in the community and this philosophy is entrenched in the DNA of Schoeman, so much so that the vision statement reads; “Throughout the generations, we have been and will remain a blessing to our people, community and country.”
One of the more recent projects, Zamukele which means adopt in Zulu, aims at establishing emerging dry bean producers as commercial farmers. Jacques Roos heads up the Zamukele project which started in 2017. The project identifies and supports small white bean farmers by providing access to mentorship, seed, fertiliser, and both local as well as international markets.
Schoeman also provides other facilities and services for the workforce. Two nursery schools educate children while their parents are at work and a new clinic finished completion at the end of 2020 at Moosrivier. A needlework centre imparts different skills and produces picking bags for various citrus farmers in the area. Primary schools and high schools run by Schoeman are also located near the various farms where the children’s education and well-being are looked after.
